In this unit participants will learn about of the legislative and ethical issues of working as a teacher. They will learn to work with colleagues to improve their teaching, making use of different curriculum and pedagogy models to evaluate teaching. Participants will collaborate in the design and delivery of learning sequences including leading learning under supervision. Students will complete 15 days professional experience as a part of this unit.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will:
1. Develop awareness of the range of professional and community organisations and networks that can support ongoing reflection and growth;
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the rationale for continued professional reflection and the implications for improved students learning;
3. Develop an applied understanding of the use of ICT to engage, deepen and extend teaching and learning;
4. Develop strategies that support effective classroom organisation and safe practices in teaching;
5. Utilise a range of learning theories to design and deliver lessons and units of work that may be suitable for the diverse social and cultural backgrounds and experiences of students;
6. Design, apply and critically evaluate a variety of strategies to support diverse student learning and development;
7. Demonstrate a capacity to work with children and/or young people in an organised educational setting;
8. Demonstrate a capacity to work with colleagues to improve teaching;
9. Demonstrate a capacity to make use of the range of professional and community organisations and networks that can support ongoing reflection and growth; and
10. Demonstrate capacity to evaluate learning and teaching programs and make consistent and comparable judgements in using a range of data (including assessment data to inform teaching and learning) and to report on student learning in the Creative and Performing Arts teaching area.

This unit is for students in the Master of Secondary Teaching who have only one teaching area identified.
